Dear Church Family, I need “times of refreshing”!

I believe it’s time to fast! I remember the first time I felt the need to fast several years ago. It seemed that everywhere I looked I saw “21 DAYS OF FASTING AND PRAYER”. I would see it in devotions, emails, teachings, and books. It was overwhelming sense that God was leading me to fast and pray for 21 days in January. It was not easy at first, and I didn’t see immediate things, like a vision or hear from an angel, but I knew I was obeying what I had been told.

I began to notice it was helping open the eyes of my heart to spiritual things. I felt more in tune with what God was doing. It didn’t change everything I was praying about, but what was happening was the fasting discipline was positioning me for something in the coming year. A few months into the year I began to notice that God was leading me and guiding me in obvious ways. Promises I had in the past came to reality and provisions that were only possible with God.

I feel that same sense again this year. I don’t know why, but I feel in my spirit that 2023 can be a year of refreshing. I want to turn the page on the past couple years of distractions, divisions, and loss. I want to “TUNE IN” and “TURN TOWARD” what God’s doing right now.

New Testament fasting is not a punishment or a legalistic exercise. It is a positioning ourselves for what God wants to do in and through us. It is not bribing God or manipulating his favor. It is setting something aside that matters to us and spending that time or space with God and tuning into his voice.

I believe this— If it matters to you, it matters to God. Fasting can be a meal (or meals), social media, TV, video games, and/or other forms of entertainment. It’s not just a diet. It is a fast with a purpose and that purpose is prayer. Imagine if many of us were able to fast together, what do you think could happen? The Bible says that if two or three pray and agree, things happen. The compounding of dozens and dozens of people fasting together is called a CORPORATE FAST. It can only lead to great things.

The fasting dates will be January 9th - 29th, 2023.

I am asking you to prayfully consider joining us. You will find helpful instruction following in the next pages. If you feel God leading you, then read and follow it carefully. There are also 21 days of devotionals to help you each day.

In addition to this corporate fast, we will have a message series for the month of January on Sunday mornings entitled “ReFreshed”. Also in January we will be having prayer and worship time Sunday evenings at 6:00pm at the Newberg Campus.
